Black Copal Resin from the Peruvian Amazon
Black copal is the resin of Protium paniculatum, a tree of the Peruvian rainforest. It belongs to the Burseraceae family, the same family as palo santo and frankincense. In Peru it is burned during ayahuasca ceremonies to clear the space, and the people in it, of heavy energy.
- Fresh, slightly citrus scent with a balsamic touch – brighter and lighter than Arabian resins, so it suits a room you use every day.
- Burned in Peruvian ceremony for cleansing – a traditional choice before meditation or plant medicine work.
- Traditionally associated with focus and balance – the smoke is refreshing rather than heavy, used to bring mind and body back into balance.
How to Burn Black Copal
- Light a charcoal disc for about 20 seconds until it catches. Hold it with tongs, never with your fingers.
- Set it on sand or soil in a heat-proof bowl and wait a few minutes, until the edges turn grey.
- Place a small piece of resin on top and let the smoke rise. Add more as it fades.
For quick clearing without charcoal, palo santo sticks come from the same family of trees.
