Cacao Ceremonia: Organic Cacao from Ecuador
The oldest traces of cacao use on earth were found in the Ecuadorian Amazon, at the site of Santa Ana-La Florida, around 5,300 years ago. Cacao Ceremonia comes from the same land: pure organic Arriba cacao, nothing added. Later the Maya and the Aztecs placed it at the center of ceremony, and the Spanish conquistadors carried it to Europe. All of them knew it as medicine, food and aphrodisiac at once.
The botanical name says the same. Theobroma cacao joins the Greek theos, god, and broma, food, with the Maya word ka’kau. Food of the gods.
What Organic Cacao Carries
- Anandamide – the “bliss molecule”, the same compound the body releases after a good workout. It is one of the reasons cacao is felt as a quiet, warm wellbeing.
- Phenylethylamine and tryptophan – associated with the release of dopamine and the production of serotonin, the brain chemistry of a good mood.
- Theobromine – steady energy and focus, with more blood flow to the brain and without the crash of coffee.
- Minerals – magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, iron and zinc, which support the heart and help the body handle stress.
Cacao as Plant Medicine
For those who work with her, cacao is a plant medicine that helps release emotional blocks that no longer serve, find forgiveness in ourselves and others, and show the way forward when we are stuck or afraid of a necessary change. She brings up what is buried deep: feelings, patterns of behavior, attachments.
This is not drinking chocolate. No sugar, no milk, no additives: pure cacao, with the bitterness that tells you nothing has been taken away.
How to Prepare Ceremonial Cacao
Heat water or plant milk to about 80°C, never boiling, and stir the cacao in slowly until it dissolves. Add cinnamon, cardamom or a pinch of salt if you like. Sit with the cup before you drink. Read more about the cacao ceremony if this is your first time, and clear the space with palo santo before you begin.
An old description of cacao calls it “a divine, celestial drink, the sweat of the stars, the vital seed, divine nectar, the drink of the gods.”
