Rich, spicy and faintly fruity, opopanax is the resin that brings your attention back into the body.
Opopanax Resin, the Sweet Myrrh
Opopanax is the resin of Commiphora erythraea, gathered in Somalia. It is a close relative of myrrh, which is why it is often called sweet myrrh. The name comes from Greek and is usually translated as “all-healing juice”, a sign of how widely this resin was once valued.
- Softer and sweeter than true myrrh – earthy and spicy, with a fruity edge that makes it easy to live with.
- Burned to awaken the senses – traditionally used to sharpen perception and intuitive awareness.
- A purifying smoke with a long history – King Solomon is said to have counted opopanax among the noblest of all incense gums.
How to Burn Opopanax
- Light a charcoal disc for about 20 seconds until it catches. Hold it with tongs, never with your fingers.
- Set it on sand or soil in a heat-proof bowl and wait a few minutes, until the edges turn grey.
- Place a small piece of resin on top and let the smoke rise. Add more as it fades.
To compare the two, burn it beside true myrrh resin from Arabia.
