Damiana Tea, Turnera Diffusa

Damiana is a small woody shrub, one to two meters tall, that grows in the subtropical regions of Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. It has aromatic, serrated leaves and small, fragrant yellow flowers, followed by little sweet fruits with a taste close to fig.

The Maya and Aztecs were among its first known users. They drank the leaves as tea and burned them as incense, valuing the plant for relaxation, love and vitality. In Mexico it has long been part of traditional liqueurs, and by the 19th century it had a place in herbal medicine in the United States and Europe as well.

Damiana in Ritual

  • Love and passion – damiana is best known as an aphrodisiac, a reputation centuries old. It was used in love potions and smoked in ceremonies of intimacy and emotional closeness.
  • Purifying incense – in shamanic tradition it was burned to cleanse a space, invite tranquility and bring clear visions.
  • Meditation – calming and mildly euphoric, used to quiet the mind and deepen spiritual connection.

What Damiana Is Traditionally Used For

In herbal tradition damiana is a mild tonic for the nervous system, used for calm and a lighter mood without sedation. It has also been used for digestion and appetite, as a gentle expectorant, and by women to ease menstrual discomfort and the symptoms of menopause. Its leaves carry essential oils with cineol and thymol, which give the warm, slightly spicy scent, and flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin, known for their antioxidant qualities.

How to Use Damiana

As tea: steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves in hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Calming and mildly euphoric, it is an evening tea, alone or for two. Many combine it with ceremonial cacao for a warm, heart-opening ritual.
As incense: burn a pinch of leaves on charcoal, or smoke them in the traditional way, to relax and to prepare a space for ritual.

Precautions: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you have diabetes or take medication that affects hormones, mood or blood sugar, consult a healthcare provider first. In large amounts, its tannins may reduce iron absorption. Rarely, it may cause mild stomach discomfort or, with excessive use, restlessness.
